Poetry Slam

In collaboration with Indigeverse, the American Indian Higher Education Consortium and TCJ Student are pleased to announce the 2022 Virtual Poetry Slam! The Poetry Slam to promote free individual expression and showcase literary talent and skills and provide an incentive for greater literary talent and skill.

Bryson Meyers

Bryson Meyers (White Elk) comes from Rocky Boy, Montana; A small reservation located in north central Montana. Home to the Chippewa and Cree Tribes. Bryson is also a 7th generation descendent of Chief Rocky Boy (Stone Child). He is also a recent graduate from the Institute of American Indian Arts. He focuses a lot of his time today on educating those around him on the life of the plains natives through his voice and creating art. His art is a way to show that message to the people today.

 

Marissa Irizarry, student sacrificial poet

Marissa Irizarry is from the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana but lives and works in Albuquerque, NM. She received her BFA and Business Certificate at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in 2021. In 2019, she has won three awards at the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, for 1st Place in Drawing, People’s Choice Award, and 2nd Place in the Poetry Slam.

Irizarry manages a small business where she produces and sells jewelry and artwork such as paintings and portraits. She utilizes her social media platform to promote her work, confirm sales, and discover new clients. She promotes artists and their artwork by organizing and planning seasonal art shows with businesses in the Fort Peck Reservation community.

Interned under the silversmith jeweler, Jeff Dement, for the Great Lakes Internship during the summer of 2018. During this time, she used the marketing skills from the Business and Entrepreneurship Certificate program at IAIA to create advertisements and edit videos for Dement’s social media platforms in preparation for the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA) market in Santa Fe that August.

In 2019, Irizarry worked with the Chanté Project to create a mural class titled “Murals with Marissa” where she instructed a group of young students to design and paint 2 murals for Wolf Point High School and Fort Peck Community College in Montana. Most recently, she helped with the CityMakers mural project for the city of Albuquerque by guiding a group of high school students creating the “LANDBACK” mural at the Alamosa Skatepark.
